Rohnert Park to launch a farmers market

May 12 2010

Rohnert Park, taking a slice out of its own history book, will launch a farmers market in June, joining a long list of Sonoma County cities that have embraced the markets as a way to focus on local food while providing ongoing community events.

The county’s third largest city, once the site of a massive seed farm, will kick off its market season June 4, a Friday.

Organizers chose the last day of the working week because only Cloverdale and Occidental hold their markets on Fridays.

“This is something fun and exciting finally for Rohnert Park residents to do on a Friday,” said Laure Tatman, the market manager. “I’ve been a resident for 33 years and there’s not a whole lot to do in our town on Friday nights.”

The market is to be located in the parking lot of the Rohnert Park Library, between Rohnert Park Expressway and City Center Drive. Tatman said 20 of 30 vendor spaces are filled so far. It is a Certified Farmers Market, which means farmers sell their produce directly to the public.
